Jamie Man 文珮玲 (London, 1987) is an artist whose work is primarily concerned with music and the poetic mystery of what we are.
Body Language (LOD Muziektheater, 2014) and PLAY: Episodes in Subspace (Gulbenkian Music Foundation LIsbon, 2016) were the first of her works to vividly explore the nature of masochism and the violence of the voyeuristic gaze. These experiments in carving a music to traverse both material and immaterial planes laid foundations for much of her work which followed including 四 / Shi (Tokyo, 2017) for the Noh performer Ryoko Aoki, Geburt (Berlin, 2019) for Dietrich Henschel/ United Ensemble Berlin and her ongoing collaboration with light artist Ben Zamora in a series of works entitled Outrenoir. Inspired by the dark canvases of french artist Pierre Soulages, each work is an installation-performance inspired by the city it is commissioned in and explores the different ways that darkness allows us to see. Outrenoir I: A reflection was created for Ensemble Xenon (Berlin, 2018) and Outrenoir II: Appetitus for the London Symphony Orchestra Soundhub (2019). Jamie’s live performance-sculpture Connaissez-vous le cri du Chocard? for l’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Théatre du Châtelet (Paris) was commissioned in 2020 supported by the Franco-British fund Diaphonique.
Jamie was a Sound and Music embedded composer with The Mahogany Opera Group (London, 2013-15), ENOA Artist-in-Residence at LOD Muziektheater (Ghent, 2018) and Soundhub Composer with the London Symphony Orchestra (London, 2018-9).
After receiving the Britten-Pears Conductors Bursary in 2010, Jamie worked as assistant conductor to Oliver Knussen and later at De Nationale Opera (Amsterdam) with Silbersee on Claude Vivier's Kopernikus. Jamie's conducting engagements include re-invitations to the Aldeburgh Music festival (Snape) in concerts with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, the UK premiere of Philip Glass' Les Enfants Terribles (London), The Transmigration of Morton F. at La Monnaie de Munt (Brussels) in collaboration with the Holland Festival (Amsterdam) and recordings for the independent record label, Another Timbre.
